The MITRE Corporation is a nonprofit organization chartered to work in conjunction with public interest. As a national resource, it provides expertise in systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts, and enterprise modernization to address its sponsors' critical needs with 5,700 scientists, engineers and support specialists. MITRE manages three United States funded research and development centers, which include the Department of Defense, Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service. MITRE also has its own independent research and development program that explores new technologies and their uses. MITRE was formed in 1958 and has headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, with more than 60 sites around the world.
