Excerpted from the website: Mr. R. J. Anschicks, supported by personal friends and business associates, explored the marketplace's reaction to an English patent, the Davy Miners' Lamp. This particular patent focused on a safe way to provide lighting for coal miners, and involved the use of a perforated metal barrier to prevent the propagation of a flame through a flammable vapor mixture. This simple concept was developed into a "Flash Arrester", the feature most important to the subsequent growth of the Protectoseal Safety Container Division product line. This design principle was applied to the development of containers for the safe storage and handling of flammable liquids. These products gained almost immediate acceptance. The workplace environment of the 1920's was vastly different from modern times. A typical manufacturing facility had overhead line shafts, creosote wood floors, usually saturated with oils and cutting liquids. Few, if any of these plants had sprinkler protection. Gasoline, naphtha, kerosene and carbon tetrachloride were common cleaning agents.
