Broadcom wants its chips to aid communications in the broadest possible way: it wants them to drive every part of the massively connected high-speed networks of the future. The core applications for its integrated circuits (ICs) are digital set-top boxes, cable modems, servers, and local-area and home networking gear. Broadcom also makes ICs for digital subscriber line (DSL), carrier access, and wireless communications equipment. Customers include Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Dell Computer, 3Com, and Cisco Systems. Co-chairmen and -founders Henry Nicholas and Henry Samueli (CTO) each control 34% of voting power in the fabless company.
