Based in Eagan, Minnesota Northwest Airlines was founded in the year 1926 by Col. Lewis Brittin. It is currently the fourth largest airline in the world in terms of kilometers flown. Apart from this it also has one of the largest domestic networks of flights in the United States. At the same time it is also the top U.S. airline carrying international passengers across the pacific. Not only that, it also carries the largest amount of cargo than all its rival airlines. The airline began its first flight in 1926 carrying air mail from the twin cities St. Paul and Minneapolis to Chicago. The remarkable achievements in 1930s was the development of first ever oxygen mask for aviation to fly at high altitudes. The significant event in 1940s was painting of its tail in red which is still in use for after fifty years. The airline flew the fastest jet service to Asia in 1960. In 1976 became the first airline to be approved by FAA to install the coordinated flight training system. Northwest was also the first airline to ban smoking on all its flights in 1988. The airline collaborated with KLM in 1991 to offer two flights to Amsterdam in a week. As it is seen the airline has been associated with many firsts. Adding another feather to their cap they were the first airline to introduce self-service kiosks which makes it easy for e-ticket customers to get boarding passes. The airline was once again first to use remote control visual inspection system that scans aircraft engines and transmits the data to technical staff.
