Established in 1929 under the direction of Collis Gundy Lane, Lane, Alton and; Horst traces its beginnings to a family practice begun by Gundy's grandfather. From the start, the Lanes built their legal reputation through hard work and quality legal services, setting a standard for total value, while handing down through four generations a philosophy designed to provide personalized attention tailored to meet each client's needs. The firm's origins date to 1884 when William H. Lane opened a law office. Son Quintin Lane, Gundy's father, eventually succeeded him in the practice. Jack R. Alton, who began practicing law in Columbus in 1950, joined Gundy in practice in 1957. Theodore L. Horst, a practicing attorney since the 1930s, joined them in 1968 and, like Alton, came aboard from another Columbus firm where he had been a partner. Their partnership was officially titled Lane, Alton and; Horst in 1970.
