Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a leading US research center that performs basic and applied research in six principal areas: neutron science, energy, supercomputing, complex biological systems, advanced materials, and national security. It also has research programs in nuclear and atomic physics, nuclear fusion, and microscopy (scientific investigation using microscopes). The lab was established as Clinton Laboratories in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bomb. It is funded by the US Department of Energy and operated by UT-Battelle, a joint venture between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute
