Saint Mark’s School was founded in 1960 by a group of dedicated parents who determined that there was a need in the Altadena community for quality education in a racially integrated setting. As a result of their planning, Saint Mark’s School, under the aegis of St. Mark’s parish, was founded. The charge given the School by the leadership of St. Mark’s Church was that the School was to reflect the changing racial and ethnic diversity of the surrounding neighborhood and to operate independently without costs to the parish.
