Company Wiki Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Company Wiki?

A Wiki is a type of web site that allows users to add, remove, and edit the content. Jigsaw's Wiki is unique because it only contains valuable business to business information.

What are some tips on writing wiki articles?

General Tips:

  • Avoid "MarketSpeak". Wikis should be factual. Avoid adjectives and superlatives like "biggest", "best", and "We're #1!". Save the promotion for your website. People read wikis for facts, not opinion.
  • Tell Your Story. Wikis are a great place to talk about the history of your Company and the story behind it. We also suggest talking about things like funding history, timelines, and achievements/awards. Check out Jigsaw's wiki for ideas.
  • Start with an Overview. Make your first paragraph be a crisp and concise overview. Many Jigsaw visitors are time crunched. Give them a bite-sized piece first - hopefully they'll want more!

What are some tips for writing a wiki specifically for Search Engine Optimization?

Search engines, like Google and Yahoo, LOVE wiki content. (This is a big reason why Wikipedia is the eighth largest website in the world). These tips will help your wiki drive free traffic to your site:

  • Use Keywords Often. Search engines live on keywords. Use them as often as you can without hammering your reader between the eyes. A good rule-of-thumb: keywords should make up 6-8% of the total copy (eg: 18-24 words in a 300 word body).
  • Use Keywords Early. Try to add the keywords as early in the copy as possible to get more "weight-age". If possible the majority of the keywords should be used in the first half of the body of the copy.
  • Linking. Use the link feature often to create links to your website from the wiki. Try to link keywords whenever possible. Products, blogs, forums, management bios, etc., are ideal for linking.
  • Cross-Linking. Linking from your website, blog, forum, etc. back to your wiki on Jigsaw is especially effective. Google became predominant because its algorithm looked at cross-links and back-links to determine relevance. Now all the crawlers do it.

What are the benefits of submitting content about my site to Jigsaw's Company Wiki?

How can a Company Wiki entry help with my site's search engine optimization?

Jigsaw's well indexed pages on search engines such as Google and Yahoo result in high web site traffic. When you add links to your company's site on Jigsaw's Company Wiki you're creating a back link from Jigsaw's high traffic and high PageRank pages. The more back links you have (and especially those from high traffic sites) the better search engines will rank your company pages. The better your PageRank the higher your pages show up in Search Engine results. Since link building is an important part to search engine optimization (SEO), leveraging free resources such as Jigsaw's Company Wiki should be a must to any marketing plan.

How do I submit a company Wiki entry?

  1. If you're not a current Jigsaw member, first create a free Jigsaw account.
  2. Go to "Find Companies"
  3. Search for your company. Once you find it, click on the company name.
  4. Click on the "Company Wiki" tab on the far right
  5. If there is no Wiki entry for this company, click on the "Create Wiki For This Company" button. If there is already information in the Company Wiki click on the "Update with Better Info" button
  6. Type your submission in the window and then click "Save Changes". Make sure to include a link to your site!

What are the rules for writing Wikis?

  1. Company Wiki articles should contain only factual information and not opinions or marketing messages.

    Examples:
Jigsaw provides an online business directory of company information and more than 9 million business contacts. Every contact in Jigsaw is complete with a full name, title, postal address, hard-to-find email address, and telephone number.
Soon, Jigsaw will offer a special section where marketers can post promotional messages. Click here to be notified when this feature goes live.

  2. Company Wiki articles should cover any of the following or related areas:
    • General company overview
    • Company history
    • Key people
    • Products and services offered
    • Competitors
    • Market and industry
    • Corporate structure
    • Corporate culture
    • Recent noteworthy news coverage
  3. Company Wiki articles should contain links to external articles and web-pages
See Wiki Terms for legal terms of use.

How will I know if someone else updates my Company Wiki entry?

Jigsaw makes it easy for you to monitor your company Wiki entries. Simply click on the "Watch This Company" link on any Company Wiki page. We'll send your updates any time the information on this page is changed.

Can I contribute to a Company Wiki article if I don't work for the company?

Yes. You can contribute to any Company's Wiki provided that the information you post is accurate and factual. Plus, every Wiki entry you create will give you credit towards our monthly Wiki contest.
