ABSTRACT
The hot scuffing phenomenon of a piston ring in ring groove is one of the important failure mechanisms in an automotive engine. The dynamic motion of a piston ring against the ring groove is very complicated. Five motions are usually involved, including radial sliding, circumferential sliding, impacting, rocking and tilting.
