Each student had a private room -- and an empty room next door.
Enrollment had been low for two decades. The dining hall was as quiet as the library. There were just 107 freshmen.
That was the situation Ron Volpe faced in 2001 when he became president of all-female Hood College. He was given a mission: increase enrollment, fix finances and create a plan for the school.
In 15 months, Volpe traveled to 65 cities, visiting alumnae in living rooms and restaurants, explaining that in order to thrive, the Frederick, Md., campus might go coed.
